Today I experimented shooting our fireplace using different exposure settings. The two examples above illustrate the two extremes!
TOP BOTTOM
HDR: No No
Exposure: 1/250 sec 20 sec
Aperture: f/3.5 f/22
ISO: 6400 100
White Balance: Auto Auto
Metering: Matrix Matrix
Flash: No No
Stabilization: Tripod Tripod (Vibration Compensation off)
Wow - you can really see the noise in the ISO 6400 shot compared to ISO 100. My small-sensor camera exhibits such noise at much lower ISO levels and I'd likely see similar at ISO 400!
ReplyDeleteWhat am I missing? All I can see diferent is the flame is blurred by the long exposure in the bottom.
ReplyDeleteClick on the photos to enlarge them, then look at the shadowed horizontal portion of the wood above the fireplace - where the shadow cast is from the mantel itself. You can see the noise is prominent in the ISO 6400 [top] image. The cleaner ISO 100 image also shows much more detail in the ribbons and tiles [although this could be due to slight focus variation as well].
DeleteAlso compare the shadows cast by the jars of rocks - they are much cleaner and consistently shaded in the ISO 100 image.
